Martyn Burton - Just Get Me In
After 22 years in the military, my career in the British Army was coming to an end. I needed to find another career but I did not want to work for anybody so I decided that I would be self employed.
Now that I had made that decision to go it alone, I needed to choose a trade that suited me. After looking at several trades within the building industry I chose Locksmithing. I checked which companies had been approved to provide courses for military personnel and I rang 1st Call Lockouts. Their location meant I could travel daily to attend the course.
I found the standard of training provided by 1st Call Lockouts to be excellent. Their staff were very knowledgeable and were always on hand to offer advice and guidance. The course was well balanced with theory and practical lessons, and there was plenty of hands on training which I prefer.
I brought a second hand van, some more tools and some stock to get me going. That was me, I was off trading! I visited as many letting agents as I could, and I introduced myself and left them a card and a flyer. The first couple of months were slow to start with but jobs started to come in. After 5 months a major letting agent in my part of the country took me on-board and I still do work for them now.
Within 2 years I brought a brand new van, kitted it out with more tools and more stock. 3 years later and I sold my van and brought an even better one.
I have been trading now for 5 years and I love what I do and how I do it. I know that I will never be mega rich but I make enough to get by. I will probably carry on trading as a locksmith until I retire. No two days are the same, every job brings its own challenges and rewards.
